How to use espresso machines properly

Espresso machines aren’t just for coffee shops anymore. More and more homes are adding espresso machines to their countertops in order to save themselves a few minutes sleep or just to make their favorite espresso drinks. And you don’t have to be an expert to use espresso machines.

Beyond the brew

As with any coffee making, espresso machines thrive on having properly ground coffee beans. If you are grinding the bean too coarse, then the hot water will go straight past the espresso and leave the taste in the bean.

When you grind the beans too fine, espresso machines have a hard time pushing water through the filter, leaving you with a harsh tasting espresso.

Using a specialty espresso grinder is the option most settle for.

Also called a burr grinder, espresso machines are guaranteed to make delicious espresso drinks when the grind is just right. These grinders allow the right amount of oils (thus, flavor) to be released and ready for hot water.

Time is coffee

Espresso machines that are filled with properly ground espresso will make shots in fifteen to twenty seconds.

What you may not know is that quality espresso can be determined by the crema on top of the espresso shot. This is a light, caramel colored foam and it is produced when the oils have been properly released.

As this develops from espresso machines and into your shot glass or cup, you will want to stop the machine.

When the crema starts changing to a whitish color, you can hurt the taste.

How much, how much

A shot glass is a good measurement for espresso machines and their ability to produce good espresso. And many coffee shops use these to check the consistency of their espresso shots.

If the espresso fills two side by side shot glasses about halfway, you’ll have great tasting espresso. Any more and you’re sacrificing taste for more espresso yield.

Espresso machines are only as good as the knowledge you have to use them correctly.
